Cycling has long been a wonderful way to get in shape and see the world. But for those who are more serious than the casual rider, cycling clothing and other gear can take your riding experience to the next level.

How should I dress for cycling?

Cycling is one of the best ways to get in shape, but are there any recommended cycling clothing and equipment that you should wear while doing it? It turns out that there is a large catalog of clothing that will make your cycling experience more comfortable.

A good quality spandex cycling jersey is an absolute must for any serious cyclist. If you’re not a fan of spandex, any other well-fitting top will do as well.

If they fit well on you and have a good fit, they are not only very comfortable, but can reduce drag at higher speeds as well.

You can also consider cycling gloves. For summer walks, you can get shortened fingers. For winter, full-length finger cuts are best.

Get the right cycling pants for your legs

While you might not be competing in the Olympics anytime soon, a good pair of specially designed shoes cycling pants must also be taken into account. Bike shorts tend to be better than regular shorts because they:

  • Are extra stretchy for better freedom of movement and;
  • Tend to come with padded crotch liners to reduce friction and absorb sweat.

For cooler climates, you may also want to consider getting bike tights, panties, and leggings. While you will be generating a lot of heat cycles, you will also sweat a lot.

Cycling jackets can make all the difference

When it comes to cold weather cycling, you should also consider a decent cycling jacket. It should keep you warm and dry, but it shouldn’t restrict your movement either.

For most weather conditions, a waterproof (but breathable) jacket is usually a good choice to protect you on the bike. Windproof gear is also strongly recommended.

Also consider those with reflective stripes or highlights for nighttime visibility on the road.

Good quality cycling shoes (and socks) are also a staple of cycling gear

Another important piece of cycling gear is a pair of cycling shoes. These are, frankly, an essential piece of the kit for any rider. For those who use clipless pedals, you should consider shoes that work with your crampons.

Road cyclists tend to choose lightweight, aerodynamic models. Mountain bikers tend to prefer durable shoes that can be used for walking around when the terrain gets too rough.

For more casual riders, sport-style sneakers tend to be adequate. You can also walk around town with them afterwards.

You may want to consider getting toe covers or full shoe covers for inclement weather.

Another piece of gear you might want to consider investing in are cycling socks. The best will help wick away sweat and can keep your feet warm in the winter.

Safety first!

Another essential cycling equipment is of good quality and a comfortable crash cycling helmet. Helmets should fit snugly and match your riding style.

They usually come in three main forms:

  • Leisure cycling helmets – Cheaper and offers basic protection.
  • Road bike helmets – Lighter, well ventilated and aerodynamic.
  • Mountain bike helmets – also well ventilated but with more extended rear protection of the head.

You can also consider getting a cycling cap. These can be worn under your helmet and are helpful in keeping your “noggin” warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

How cold is too cold to ride a bike?

Unless you live in the Arctic Circle or plan to cycle to the South Pole, “too cold” is a very subjective term. But for most cyclists, anywhere between 10 degrees Celsius and 0 degrees Celsius or less is considered really very cold.

But the colder weather also comes with other dangers beyond the temperature that the rider should consider before hitting the road. Ice and snow, for example, can present a serious risk of an accident if you are not careful.

If you are serious about riding in cold weather, make sure take some of these precautions first.
